BOULDER, Colo. — [November 27, 2007] — Applied Trust announced today that one of its senior engineers, Paul Nelson, has been invited to join one of the SysAdmin, Audit, Network, Security (SANS) Institute’s Global Information Assurance Certification (GIAC) Advisory Boards. Nelson recently earned the GIAC Certified Forensics Analyst (GCFA) Silver certification, proving his knowledge, skills, and abilities in handling advanced incident handling scenarios, conducting formal incident investigations and carrying out forensic investigation of networks and hosts. The GIAC Advisory Boards are made up of GIAC-certified professionals who are interested in giving back to the security community by playing an active role in the GIAC program. Participation is by invitation only, and of the more than 18,000 GIAC certified professionals worldwide only approximately 800 have been invited to participate. Specific advisory boards for the organization’s various certifications are divided into the categories of auditing, management, and security administration; Nelson will participate on the GCFA advisory board, which is part of the security administration category. “We are very excited that Paul has been asked to participate on the GCFA Advisory Board,” noted Ned McClain, Applied Trust’s CTO. “Paul’s excellent technical credentials make him a great addition to the Advisory Board, and we are confident that his contributions will help GIAC maintain and improve its invaluable certification program. We are proud to be able to offer our clients renowned industry expertise such as Paul’s.” The Advisory Board list is used to discuss issues directly related to GIAC and SANS business, such as training and certification. On occasion the list is also used to post opportunities for paid work, such as SANS courseware development or GIAC exam question development. The GIAC was founded in 1999 by the SANS Institute as a way to address the need to validate the skills of security professionals. The goal of GIAC is to provide assurance that a certified individual holds the appropriate level of knowledge and skill necessary for a practitioner in key areas of information security. Unlike many other certifications, GIAC certifications measure specific skill knowledge areas rather than just general purpose security knowledge. Nelson also holds the Microsoft Certified Systems Engineer: Security Certification and the Certified Information Systems Security Professional (CISSP) certification, one of the most highly respected international credential for recognizing a person’s exemplary knowledge, skills, and abilities in essential areas of the information security field.
